While you are sleeping

17 May 2012

Did you know that approximately 95% of Australian animals are nocturnal due to our extreme climate conditions?

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), together with the Baringhup Landcare group, is holding a ‘Nocturnal Natives night’ on Thursday 24 May from 5.00 -7.30pm (supper provided).

The session will be held in the Baringhup Primary School Hall, Mitchell Street, Baringhup, and will explore the night animals that live along our waterways and promote the benefits of protecting and enhancing rivers.

The evening will include discussion on a range of nocturnal animals and their habitat needs and includes a spotlight walk.

Jon Leevers, who manages the North Central CMA’s Loddon Stressed River project, said the evening promises to be informative and will also showcase works undertaken in partnership with the Baringhup Landcare group and the local primary school to protect remnant vegetation and habitat.

“Works within the township area along the Loddon River include the protection of many large hollow trees, which are vital habitat for our native fauna, such a birds, possums, owls and bats.”

“Guest speaker, Adriana Simmonds, a wildlife shelter operator and Director of Human Seeds, will present on the importance of protecting habitat for wildlife and the benefits of living alongside our nocturnal neighbours.  Adriana is a passionate advocate for native wildlife who will share her experience from more than 12 years in wildlife care and education,” he said.

Please RSVP to the North Central CMA by Wednesday 23 May on (03) 5448 7124 indicating any dietary requirements.
