What type of frog is in your pond?

2 Apr 2012

If you are wondering what type of frog is in your backyard, or want to learn more about the frog species in your local waterway, then head to Newstead on Saturday 28 April for the 2012 Annual Water Science forum.

The forum is being hosted by the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Waterwatch program and will focus on frogs found in the North Central CMA region.  The forum will run from 9.00am to 3.30pm and coincides with ‘International Save the Frogs Day’.

Ms Cass Davis, North Central CMA Regional Waterwatch Coordinator, said five frog experts have been secured to share their knowledge at the forum.

“Frog enthusiasts, Ms Elaine Bayes and Damian Cook, both from Australian Ecosystems, will provide useful tips to help identify frogs as well as ideas on how to build a frog-friendly habitat.

“Mr Edward Tsyrlin, co-author of the Waterbug Book, will speak on what frogs eat and Mr Peter Johnson, from the Department of Sustainability and Environment, will share his expertise on how to monitor and report frogs found in the region.

“The day will conclude with a presentation from Mr Ray Draper who is keen to present findings from his research on the many threats to frogs in our region,” said Ms Davis.

Ms Davis also confirmed that the popular ‘North Central Waterwatch Frogs Field Guide’ has been re-printed and now includes three more frog species known to occur in the region.  Free copies of the guide will be available at the Newstead forum.

To attend the forum, please contact the North Central CMA on 03 5448 7124 by Thursday 19 April as places are limited.
