Weeds Being Removed from Avoca River

8 Jul 2009

Works are underway to remove Desert Ash, Boxthorn, Spiny Rush and other weeds from the Avoca River, an important environmental asset in North Central Victoria. The removal and control of these weeds is part of the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Avoca Reach 7 River Health project.

North Central CMA Project Officer Paul Nelson explains, “Avoca Reach 7 is an identified priority River Reach for the North Central CMA.  The removal and revegetation works in the Avoca River are a continuation of previous works that the North Central CMA has undertaken to protect and enhance the Avoca River.

“A local contractor will be using various methods to remove the weeds.  Once the weed control works are complete, we will commence revegetation with over 1500 indigenous native species being reintroduced into the area.

“Replanting will start in late July and is expected to be completed in September.  The local Avoca Primary School is participating in the project helping to plant over 300 trees; a local contractor will plant the remaining trees.”

Local Ken Coates, North Central CMA Natural Resource Management Committee Member said the project has good community support, “The community are pleased to see these works being undertaken in their area.  The removal of these weeds and the replanting of the area is a terrific project for the local community and enables local plant species to be reintroduced into the area.”

The North Central CMA works with the community to protect and improve rivers and the natural environment in North Central Victoria.
