The Lockington Landcare group has seen its membership swell by combining with a newly formed soils’ group in the area. 

Ms Wendy Sims, a local farmer, said “the Landcare group reformed about 12 months ago but with only a small number of members.  By combining with the soils’ group we now have over 40 members. The influx of new members is contributing to renewed vigor within the farming community in the Lockington district.”  

Ms Sims, along with another local farmer Mr Dan Dullard, is supporting the group courtesy of funding from the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Farming for Sustainable Soils project.

Ms Sims and Mr Dullard will coordinate activities to support local farmers in the district in an effort to minimise the risk of soil erosion and explore opportunities to build soil carbon. 

“Dan and I have been working hard over the past few months and have already held a number of events with strong community interest,” said Ms Sims. 

North Central CMA Soils’ project officer, Mr Darren Bain, said the success of the Farming for Sustainable Soils project, funded by the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program, is that it is driven by the local community. 

“The community is involved from the very beginning, identifying current soil health issues and discussing the mitigation options. Information is shared between the Lockington group members and the seven other soil groups across the region.

The sharing of knowledge and information is a vital ingredient of the project which unites local communities with common interests,” concluded Mr Bain.
