Farmers are being faced with a series of new sustainability challenges, which is why making the right decisions about soil is more important than ever.

Between a variable climate, new markets, and water challenges, finding useful soils advice quickly can be vital for the success of a farm business.

Navigating those choices and finding the opportunities within them is the focus of a forum at the Pyramid Hill Bowling Club on 21 March, organised by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Agriculture Victoria.

North Central CMA Sustainable Agriculture Program Manager Mandy Coulson said the event is focussed on providing practical insights and tools to help farmers make informed decisions.

“In complex systems with so many decisions to be made, it can be tough for farmers to make sound decisions,” she said.

“Soil is central to a lot of the challenges farmers face, so understanding the makeup of soil and how to improve it can go a long way to helping them make the right decisions.

“Think Agri’s Kate Burke will talk about why paying attention to your soil makes great business sense.”

The event will also act as a launch of the region’s new Soil Health Guide toolkit, a project delivered by the North Central CMA and Agriculture Victoria and funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

“Local farmer Jo Bear will talk about her experiences and how to unlock the potential with the Soil Health Guide resources,” Mrs Coulson said.

“The Soil Health Guide is a one-stop shop, with a hardcopy book, a website, and a series of how-to videos helping you get started.”
