Regional Consortium Bids for Farm Water Saving Funds

11 Jan 2010

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is part of a consortium that could see the region receive a share of the Australian Government’s $300 million investment in on-farm efficiency across the lower Murray–Darling Basin.

The Goulburn-Broken CMA is the lead agency for an investment proposal to secure funds for the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District, in partnership with the North Central CMA, Northern Victoria Irrigation Renewal Project, Goulburn-Murray Water, Dairy Australia, Victorian Farmers Federation and Northern Victoria Irrigators. Of the $300 million invested throughout the lower Murray–Darling Basin, $241 million is being sought for the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District. Funding received will be directed to on-farm projects that save water through improved irrigation infrastructure and management

“Through this consortium we can engage regional irrigators, industry and the private sector to upgrade farm irrigation technology while supporting system modernisation that will achieve water savings for environmental, agricultural and social benefits," said North Central CMA Chief Executive Officer, Damian Wells.

“The objective of the funding is to help deliver a long-term sustainable future for Murray–Darling Basin irrigation communities,” said Mr Wells. “Funding will be provided over a three-year period for on-farm water use efficiency activities that will result in more efficient irrigation systems.”

The investment proposal is currently being assessed by the Australian Government, with a decision expected in February 2010. If successful, the consortium will develop guidelines for eligible farm irrigation infrastructure improvement works by early in 2010. In the meantime, irrigators can liaise with Catchment Management Authorities and Department of Primary Industries offices for more information or to register for an Expression of Interest form.

“Whilst no funding has been approved at this stage, it is important for the irrigation community to be aware of the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District proposal and the guidelines,” Mr Wells concluded.
