Not Too Late to Report Levee Damage in Need of Repair

23 Sep 2011

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is again calling on the community to report levee breaches in the Kerang, Benjeroop and Pental Island areas as part of an ongoing effort to repair the damage caused by the January 2011 floods.

North Central CMA CEO, Damian Wells said since the January flood event, there has been an ongoing program to repair levees to protect community assets.

“The North Central CMA has relied strongly on input and advice from the local community in identifying damaged levees and I encourage the community to contact the CMA if there are still levees in the area which remain damaged.

“So far the community has reported 145 sites where levee banks have been damaged.  Of the 145 levee sites reported, 138 sites have been repaired, employing local contractors with funding from the Victorian Government.”

Any additional sites reported will be assessed and where the levee is a strategic priority and breached due to recent flooding, the damage will be repaired.   Mr Wells explained that a strategic priority are those levees that contribute to the protection of significant public assets such as roads, bridges and irrigation systems or a substantial group of high value assets.

Where levee repairs are not a strategic priority, they will not be undertaken by the North Central CMA.  Landholders can undertake approved repairs themselves.  All levee repairs including fixing breaches, topping up low points or increasing the height of the levees requires approval from the local Council.  Where levees are on adjacent crown land approval will also be required from the relevant public land manager.

To report flood any remaining flood damaged or breached levees please contact the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124.
