North Central Catchment Management Authority Celebrates Spring in the Bendigo Bush

25 Aug 2008

Spring in the Bendigo Bush is kicking off on Saturday the 30th August at Central Lansell, Kangaroo Flat from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm. There will be free information sessions along with giveaways and plenty of information on ways to enjoy Bendigo and surrounds during Spring.

The aim of the program is to promote and raise awareness of the bushland surrounding the City of Greater Bendigo including National Parks, Regional Parks, State Forests, Conservation Reserves Council parks and other natural areas around Bendigo. The annual event gives members of the community a chance to see Bendigo's parks and surrounding bushlands when they are at their best during late August through to September.

The concept was initiated in 1994 by the Bendigo Field Naturalists Club. Since its early beginnings, many groups have contributed to its running; this year support for this event comes from Parks Victoria, City of Greater Bendigo, Department of Sustainability and environment, Bendigo Field Naturalists Club, La Trobe University, Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE (BRIT) and North Central Catchment Management Authority.

As part of its contribution to Spring in the Bendigo Bush, North Central CMA is hosting two events: "Bats in our Bush" on Saturday the 6th September and "Capture the beauty of the Bendigo Bush" on Saturday the 20th September.

"Bats in our Bush" is being held at Kennington Reservoir on Saturday the 6th September from 10.00 am - 12.00 pm with another session in the afternoon from 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm. Grant Baverstock will be presenting on the day, Grant has been a bat enthusiast for nearly 30 years. During these sessions there will be information about bats in the Bendigo region and their interactions around water bodies. It is also envisaged that participants will learn about bat ecology, survey methods and techniques and bat conservation. There will also be the opportunity to see a harp trap and echo location demonstrations.

The second event - Capture the beauty of the Bendigo Bush is a nature photography workshop with renowned photographer David Kleinert David is a passionate photographer who has been capturing the beauty and complexity of flora and fauna in the Bendigo region for many years. David will be sharing his knowledge and experience on wildlife photography, offering guidance on equipment selection, compositing, post-production and web publishing amongst other things. Bring your own camera, appropriate clothing and

footwear. The interactive workshop is being held on Saturday the 20th September from 9.00 am - 4.00 pm. The day will include a free BBQ lunch and refreshments whilst touring various sites in the area. Participants are asked to meet at the lookout car park at One Tree Hill Regional Park.
