Thanks to sharp-eyed farmer, Martin McKenna, a new invasive plant has been discovered and hopefully eradicated near Baynton.   

The plant, identified as Oxalis obtusa by Ian Higgins - North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Kyneton Woodlands project officer - hasn’t been recorded before in north central Victoria.    

Ian said “Invasive species are one of the main threats to biodiversity on the planet.  We are lucky to have found this one while it is still in the early stages - eradication is usually too expensive once a weed gets away.”   

One of the aims of the North Central CMA’s Kyneton Woodlands project is to tackle the threat from invasive species, so Ian arranged for spraying of the infestation.  

He asks people to notify him of any further sightings of this or other unusual weeds in the district.
