Landholder Funding Available for Woodland Protection

23 Sep 2010

Private landholders who live in the mid Loddon region are encouraged to apply for funding from the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) to protect Box–Gum Grassy Woodlands on their properties.

The Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program has provided the North Central CMA with funding for a Box–Gum Grassy Woodlands project.

North Central CMA Project Officer, Robyn McKay explains that Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands in the mid Loddon region contain White Box and Yellow Box trees, or can be a mixture of the two species.  Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands also include areas where the species previously existed but may no longer be easily recognised.

“An area where trees have been removed is referred to as derived grassland,” said Mrs McKay.  “It is important for the community to be aware that these areas still form part of the critically endangered and nationally listed vegetation community, and should be protected.

“Less than six per cent of the pre-European extent of this vegetation community remains and many threatened plant and animals are associated with the Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands, such as Regent Honeyeaters and Swift Parrots,” said Mrs McKay.

North Central CMA has produced a fact sheet to assist people to identify the vegetation community on their property, which is available on www.nccma.vic.gov.au.

“Where remnant trees exist, Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands appear like a park with trees over a ground layer of native grasses. Wildflowers might provide a colourful display in the spring time. Our fact sheets will help in identifying these areas and provide information regarding funding applications,” Mrs McKay continued.

“Funding is available through the project for onground works, such as fencing and revegetation works on suitable sites,” she explained. “Landcare groups and Networks may also apply on behalf of landholders, who often struggle to find time. Landholders who are too busy to take this on themselves are encouraged to contact North Central CMA and we can assist or put them in touch with a Landcare group.”

Interested landholders or Landcare groups can obtain further information by contacting the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124, or visiting www.nccma.vic.gov.au.  Applications must be submitted to the North Central CMA by 1 November 2010.
