Joint Effort Benefits Loddon River

27 Aug 2009

In a joint effort between the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and the Laanecoorie Foreshore Committee, 1 km of fencing along the Loddon River at Laanecoorie has been erected.

A small crew employed through the North Central CMA Drought Employment Program worked together to clean up the site by removing the old fence, then erecting a new fence to protect the Loddon River from bank erosion and inappropriate access.

According North Central CMA Loddon Stressed River project manager Jon Leevers, the completion of the fencing is another great result for the environment and local community, and builds on other successful environmental works completed along the Loddon River via the LoddonStressed River project.

“The funding for this work has been provided through the North Central CMA’s Loddon Stressed River project, part of the Victorian Government‘s Large Scale River Restoration program, which has been running since 2003. It is jointly delivered by the North Central CMA and the Department of Primary Industries, which have worked with local landholders along the Loddon River between Cairn Curran and the Murray River. The project has protected over 200 km of river with fencing and revegetation, undertaken willow management, controlled bank erosion and improved habitat conditions for native fish.

“This project enabled us to use the skills of local people to protect the good quality vegetation that exists along this stretch of the LoddonRiver and to reduce access pressure which can cause bank erosion.  These works have also had terrific support from the local Committee of Management and our partner agencies,” Jon said.

The North Central CMA works with the community to protect and improve rivers and the natural environment in North Central Victoria, and implements the Drought Employment Program with funding from the Victorian Government.
