Innovative farm walks in July

11 Jul 2012

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) invites farmers to attend one of three farm walks between the 24-27 July showcasing innovative farming practices being adopted in the region.

The farm walks will visit properties in Kerang (Tuesday), Echuca West (Thursday) and Gunbower (Friday).  Starting at 10.30am – 1.00pm, each session will finish with a free BBQ lunch.

Mr Joel Spry, project manager for the North Central CMA said the farm walks promise to be informative with local and expert advice on hand. “The  farm walks present a unique opportunity to visit local farms, talk to farmers and see first hand what farming options and practices are being adopted across the region.

Profiting from dry land management on an irrigation farm, progress of trial sites using native grasses, sandalwood and biodiversity and agro-forestry will be the focus.” Mr Spry confirmed that Scott McGillivray, Austrade’s regional export adviser and one of the Central Victorian Export Networks International Trade advisers, and Damian Jones, an agronomist from the Department of Primary Industries, will be at each site to share their knowledge and experience on a range of topics.

“Scott has worked across a number of industry sectors and has been successful in developing business opportunities for a wide range of regional industries.

Scott is keen to discuss local business ideas, assist in developing plans using the latest market research to create a profitable business. Participants will also be able to see for themselves a number of income sources from farm trees including flora culture, timber and the productivity benefits to sheep producers said Mr Spry.

RSVP for further site details and catering purposes to the North Central CMA by 5 pm Monday 23 July 2012 on (03) 5448 7124 or email info@nccma.vic.gov.au, indicating which site(s) you will be attending. The farm walks are part of the North Central CMA’s Adopting Sustainable Farming Practices project with funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country Initiative.
