Hop into the Rabbit Buster Roadshow

27 Oct 2016

One of Australia’s leading biological rabbit-control experts will speak at a series of information sessions across the catchment in November aimed at taking the next steps in reducing rabbit populations.

Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre vertebrate ecologist and researcher Dr Tarnya Cox will be the guest speaker at the Landcare-hosted free Rabbit Buster Roadshow events at Wycheproof, Smeaton, Newstead, Serpentine and Kerang from November 14 to 16.

Dr Cox is leading the national scientific research campaign to reduce the devastating agricultural and environmental impact of rabbits.

North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Regional Landcare Coordinator Tess Grieves said the sessions will cover the latest rabbit bio-control research, the Rabbit Buster campaign, case studies from local Landcare groups, as well as the next steps in integrated rabbit management.

“Dr Cox will discuss emerging control measures, her current research to find a new strain of Calicivirus and efforts to improve the biological control of rabbits,” she said.

“Given rabbits are an ongoing land-management issue in our region, the North Central CMA is committed to strong partnership programs.

“A local Landcare group or network will host each session and there will be a lot of information available for participants to take with them.”

Victorian Government Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources Established Invasive Animals Biosecurity manager John Matthews will also join the roadshow.

Ms Grieves said rabbits have historically been a major pest species across the region.

“However, the control of rabbits has improved markedly by capitalising on biological control releases and community led rabbit action programs,” she said.

“We need to continue working with landholders and the community, especially those who have undertaken baiting on their property, and discuss what to do next.”

The Roadshow is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and the Victorian Government.
