Hooked on the Big Cohuna Festival

18 Oct 2016

The popular Catch a Carp Day is on again at this year’s Big Cohuna Festival.

Children between the ages of six and 16 are invited along to the free event, held on the banks of Gunbower Creek at the Cohuna Apex Park on Sunday 30 October from 10am to noon.

North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Project Officer Amy Russell said children can register beforehand, or from 9.30am on the day.

“There will be prizes awarded to young anglers who catch the largest carp and most carp,” she said.

“The main aim of the day is for kids to have fun, but it also provides a great opportunity to educate children about the creek in a family friendly atmosphere.

“During the day we will talk about responsible fishing, the Native Fish Recovery Plan, highlight the different types of fish that inhabit the creek and the importance of connectivity between the creek and the forest.  A highlight of the event this year will be the inclusion of Fishcare and a carp cooking demonstration.

“Catch a Carp is always a great way to connect to the local community and talk about the Gunbower Creek and what’s being done to protect it.”

Participants will need to supply their own rod and fishing gear however bait and fresh fruit will be supplied by North Central CMA. Children are required to be accompanied by a guardian.

Pre-registering for the competition is highly recommended as the event will book out fast. Phone the North Central CMA on 03 5448 7124 or email at info@nccma.vic.gov.au
