Mount Alexander Shire Council, in partnership with the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), is pleased to announce a significant development in the ongoing efforts to enhance flood resilience and preparedness in Harcourt.

A drop-in session on Wednesday 25 October from 3 to 5pm at Harcourt Leisure Centre, Recreation Reserve, 63 Binghams Road, Harcourt will present draft flood mapping to the community and gather essential feedback.

Harcourt has experienced several significant flood events, notably in 2010, 2011, 2016, and most recently in October 2022, underscoring the need for comprehensive flood data and preparedness measures.

“The Harcourt Flood Study is a vital initiative for the community and has reached an important milestone with the completion of draft flood mapping. The project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of flood levels and extents for various flood events within the study area,” North Central CMA Waterways and Floodplain Officer Nick Butler said.

In addition to the in-person event, community members can also access an interactive mapping tool to see the predicted flood extent, provide comments and upload photos, at Council’s online engagement platform from Friday October 13 to Friday November 10.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Manager Engineering, Paul Diss said the Harcourt Flood Study represents a crucial step forward in enhancing the safety and resilience of the Harcourt community in the face of potential flooding.

“The data generated will serve as a critical resource for emergency management response, community education, updating planning controls, and informing future land development planning.”

“I encourage people to come along to the drop-in session or visit the online portal to review and share your feedback on the draft flood mapping. Community input is vital in shaping our future preparedness efforts,” said Mr. Diss.
