Gunbower Forest Regulators Get a Make-Over

16 Dec 2011

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is coordinating the refurbishment of three regulators in Gunbower Forest.

The regulators are located at Reedy Lagoon, Black Swamp and Yarran Creek on the Gunbower Creek downstream of Cohuna.

North Central CMA Gunbower Forest project coordinator Ms Chatfield said the regulators are being refurbished to ensure they are safe, stable and can be operated over a wide range of flows in Gunbower Creek.

“Once the regulators are upgraded they will be used by the CMA to deliver environmental water to wetlands in Gunbower Forest.

“The modifications will also allow small bodied native fish to move from the creek into the forest when the regulators are being operated, giving them access to food and breeding sites in the wetlands.

“A new fishway will be built on the Yarran Creek regulator as part of the upgrades. This will provide passage between the Gunbower and Yarran Creeks for large and small-bodied fish, complementing other fishway works that are happening along Gunbower Creek” said Ms Chatfield.

“As Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has been undertaking the works some of the tracks in the forest have been closed. However, all tracks will be reopened from 22 December 2011 to 16 January 2012 to provide access over the Christmas and New Year period.”

Following the Christmas holiday period G-MW construction crews will need to close Hudson Track until mid February.  Road closed signage will be erected on the track and at the construction site.

Funding for the construction works is provided by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority through The Living Murray program and is part of the North Central CMA’s Gunbower Forest Flooding for Life project. The Living Murray is a joint initiative funded by the New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Australian Capital Territory and the Commonwealth governments, coordinated by the Murray–Darling Basin Authority.
