Victorian Water Minister Peter Walsh officially opened the refurbished Yarran Creek Regulator in Gunbower Forest, north of Cohuna on Friday 31 August.     

The Yarran Creek regulator, together with two other refurbished regulators, will enable environmental water to be delivered more efficiently to the lower forest and assist with better managing natural flood events.   

Funded through The Living Murray Program, Mr Walsh said that at a cost of $1.6 million the completed and refurbished regulators will ensure the health of the forest for years to come.   

The regulators will enable the targeted delivery of water from Gunbower Creek to individual wetlands and wetland complexes.  The lower landscape regulators are just one part of a much larger package of engineering structures that will be built.   

Goulburn-Murray Water has carried out the refurbishing of the regulators so that up to 2,500 hectares of wetlands and River Red Gum forest can be flooded.  The refurbished regulators will also allow fish to move between the forest and the creek.    

The upgrades have also improved the functionality and structural stability of the regulators and ensured they meet today’s Occupational Health and Safety requirements.   

“Using environmental water more efficiently will achieve better environmental outcomes across the Murray-Darling Basin, with the added benefits of better protection for flora and fauna against drought and without flooding towns, farms and roads, said Mr Walsh.   

The Living Murray is a joint initiative funded by the New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Australian Capital Territory and the Commonwealth governments, coordinated by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority.
