Future farming options field day

26 Nov 2012

A field day at Mystic Park on Thursday 6 December will explore future farming options in northern Victoria. The field day is being hosted by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), in partnership with Kilter Pty Ltd and the Australian Government’s Action on the Ground and Caring for our Country programs.

Mr Joel Spry, North Central CMA Project Manager, said the free field day will run from 9.30 am until 1.00 pm with a BBQ lunch on offer.

“The day promises to be full of thought-provoking information on locally adoptable farming options.  Guest speakers and local farmers will be on hand to discuss carbon farming – including a carbon farming trial site, grazing of native pastures and new opportunities in semi-arid dryland farming.”

The field day will take place at the intersection of Cook and Fogarty Roads, in an area known locally as the 5 on 7, south of Lake Boga. Directional signage will be erected on the day.

Mr Spry confirmed carbon farming will feature strongly throughout the day including information on how farmers can enter the carbon market.

Mr Shawn Butters, Executive Manager of Kilter Pty Ltd, will give participants an update on Kilter’s ‘Future Farming Landscapes’ project.

“Participants will have the opportunity to view reconfigured irrigation land which demonstrates the potential of capturing carbon in the soil through innovative grazing management using native grass species,” Mr Spry said.

“People attending will hear from local farmer Ms Jo Bear about setting up profitable dryland grazing on previously irrigated land.”

Soil specialist Mr Kym Luitjes, from Sunraysia Environmental, is overseeing the soil carbon sampling and analysis associated with the Action on the Ground project and will be on site to provide technical information and answer questions.

Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP to the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124 or info@nccma.vic.gov.au before Tuesday 4 December.

The field day is a joint effort between the North Central CMA’s Innovative Farming project and the Regional Landcare Facilitator project with funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country and Action on the Ground initiatives.
