Fresh flows boost Campaspe River health

4 Jun 2013

The Campaspe River will benefit from a fresh flow of water over the coming months as environmental water is released to enhance the river’s health.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is managing the release on behalf of the Goulburn-Murray Water Connections Project and confirmed the water will be released from 1 June 2013.

Ms Emer Campbell, North Central CMA Executive Manager, Murray, Campaspe and Avon- Richardson catchments, said the water is coming from Lake Eppalock to benefit the stretch of river downstream to the junction with the Murray River at Echuca.

“The release will benefit native fish movement and water quality.  It will also help maintain habitat for the macroinvertebrates (water bugs) communities.

“Local residents and visitors to the area may notice a change in water flow and appearance, however towns along the river will not be impacted by the increased flows. The maximum rise in the water level will be approximately 40 cm at the siphon,” concluded Ms Campbell.

The environmental water release is consistent with the 2012-13 Victorian Environmental Water Holder’s (VEWH) Seasonal Watering Plan. The North Central CMA, in partnership with VEWH, Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Goulburn-Murray Water and community representatives, developed the Campaspe system section of the plan.
