The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Buloke Shire Council have welcomed the State Government’s announcement of $150,000 for the development of a Flood Management Plan for Charlton.

Mr Damian Wells, Chief Executive Officer for the North Central CMA said the Flood Management Plan would determine ways to reduce the impact on the Charlton community in the event of future floods.

“Charlton was one of the hardest hit towns following the recent floods.  Whilst we recognise that the community has a long road ahead to recovery, the announcement of this funding provides an opportunity to plan for the future.”

Mr Wells confirmed the North Central CMA will work closely with the Buloke Shire Council and the community in the development of the plan.

“A Steering Committee, with representation from the community, the North Central CMA, and other key stakeholders will be appointed to oversee the development of the plan.  The Steering Committee will consider the impact of different size flood events through the town, identify key issues and explore infrastructure options to mitigate flood impact.”

Buloke Shire Chief Executive Officer Warwick Heine said local input will be critical in the progression of the plan. 

“The community of Charlton will play a key role in guiding this plan and will have the opportunity to not only raise concerns, but also be involved in the plan’s development.  We will also be working with the Charlton Community Recovery Committee who is playing an important role in re-building the community.

“It’s important to tap into local knowledge, understand local issues and the impact the floods have had on families, communities, businesses and farmers.  Community meetings will be scheduled to capture this information.” concluded Mr Heine.
