Flood Employment Recovery Program Making Progress in Bendigo

26 Oct 2011

Work crews within the City of Greater Bendigo have commenced repairing flood damage to property, infrastructure and key environmental assets thanks to the State Government’s $2.7 million Flood Recovery Employment Program.

Coordinated by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) the Program provides employment to community members who have been adversely affected by the floods last Spring and Summer.

Mr Adrian Martins who manages the Program said re-establishing the resilience of rural and regional communities is a high priority for the North Central CMA.  “To date we have employed 56 community members, either full or part-time, across the North Central CMA region, including two work crews servicing the City of Greater Bendigo and surrounding areas.

“Since August the Bendigo area crews have undertaken woody weed control, fencing and removal of debris along Bendigo Creek.  They are currently working at the Crusoe Road public reserve to enhance the environmental and recreational values of the area so that they can continue to be enjoyed by the community.”

Mr Martins confirmed that part of the crew’s ongoing tasks will involve further weed management along sections of Sheepwash Creek and Bendigo Creek through to Robinson Crusoe Gully.
