Flood Debris Removal Continues in Creswick and Clunes

4 Feb 2011

Flood debris removal has commenced along the Creswick Creek. The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Hepburn Shire Council are working together on the cleanup program in response to community concerns.

The CMA received more than one hundred calls from community members across North Central region following the January floods. Many of these calls came from residents in the Creswick and Clunes areas who were concerned about debris from the floods which have accumulated and caused blockages in Creswick Creek.

The North Central CMA and Hepburn Shire Council are addressing these concerns, with staff inspecting sites along Creswick Creek to assess the debris and coordinating what action is needed where necessary.

Mr Damian Wells, North Central Chief Executive Officer said the Authority is working closely with Hepburn Shire.

“The main focus is clearing debris from the Creek where backed up or diverted water could potentially damage critical public infrastructure in the event of a future flood event. These State Government funded works commenced on Friday February 4.”

Hepburn Shire Chief Executive Officer Kaylene Conrick said she understood community concerns and the distress that many were still enduring following the floods.

“I want to assure everyone that we are giving these works our highest priority. A contactor is on site from today. Immediate works will concentrate on the removal of debris and improving channel capacity. Council will continue to work with North Central CMA as it investigates possible further short term flood mitigation works. At the same time we will also continue to work with all relevant government departments and agencies to ensure a flood protection plan is undertaken so that effective long term solutions are identified,” Ms Conrick said.

The works in Creswick will initially focus on the section of the creek from Water Street to the Maryborough Line Railway Bridge and are expected to take three to four weeks. Works in Clunes are expected to commence next week for a period of three weeks. The works will target Creek Parade to the vicinity of the Camp Street ford.
