Enhancement Works for the Loddon River

28 Oct 2010

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is continuing to roll out a program of activities across North Central Victoria to protect and enhance the region’s waterways.

Funded by the Victorian Government, activities in the upper Loddon catchment focus on protection and restoration and include waterway fencing, weed control and revegetation on both private and public land.

“Key to the success of the project is working with local communities to identify and implement priority actions to achieve both a positive result for the river and the community,” said North Central CMA project manager Mrs Angela Gladman.

In 2009, the Newstead Landcare Group developed a Loddon River Restoration Plan that identified what action is required to protect the Loddon River upstream of Cairn Curran Reservoir.  The North Central CMA continues to work closely with the Landcare group to help the group implement the Restoration Plan.

Mr Nick Layne, North Central CMA Catchment Restoration Officer explains, “As identified in the Restoration Plan, we will be undertaking works to control willows amongst the existing River Red Gums along the Loddon River during the summer months of 2010-11.

“The willow control works are planned for upstream of the Loddon bridge to the Ford Crossing.  Works will involve stem injection of standing willows and some mechanical removal.  Revegetation with indigenous plants will be completed by a group from Conservation Volunteers Australia in spring 2011.”

The North Central CMA will be contacting landholders that live close to the river where the works will be undertaken.
