Date Extended to Comment on Water Strategy

25 May 2010

The Victorian Government has extended the date for submissions on the draft Western Region Sustainable Water Strategy, allowing an extra month for the community to submit comments.

The Sustainable Water Strategy is a Victorian Government initiative to secure the region’s water future. It is the western region’s response to future drought and the uncertainty of climate change over the next 50 years.

According to acting Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), Emer Campbell, this is an important opportunity to influence policy which seeks to find the best balance between ensuring secure water supply for urban and rural uses, and environmental needs.

“This Strategy takes in the Avoca and Avon-Richardson catchments within the North Central CMA region. On behalf of the Department of Sustainability and Environment, the North Central CMA hosted a community meeting in St Arnaud last month to provide information about the Strategy and discuss issues of concern to the local community.

“We are pleased that the community has more time to provide feedback on the Strategy, and encourage people to submit comments to DSE for consideration,” Ms Campbell said.

Submissions on the draft Western Region Sustainable Water Strategy should be submitted to DSE by 21 June.  Visit www.ourwater.vic.gov.au/programs/sws/western for a copy of the Strategy and details on how to submit comments, or contact the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124.

The draft Strategy has been prepared by the Department of Sustainability and Environment on behalf of the Minister for Water.
