Connecting people, passions, and science

The term “people person” gets thrown around a lot, but it’s the perfect descriptor for North Central CMA Regional Landcare Coordinator Tess Grieves.

Tess is passionate about people. And people inspire her. As do the places and connections that bring people together.

Tess works with more than 160 Landcare groups and networks throughout the catchment, and thousands of volunteers, to help improve and rehabilitate places communities love.

“Natural resource management is about people, as simple as that,” she said.

“And we have so many passionate locals who are doing amazing things all across our catchment.

“And I love working with every single one of them. I have to pinch myself sometimes to realise I get to have a career out of Landcare.”

Tess’ commitment and passion was recognised at the 2021 Victorian Landcare Awards late last year, when she was named the Steadfast Young Landcarer of the Year.

“I’m humbled to have won this award on behalf of the volunteers I work with every day,” she said.

“It’s important their work is recognised, and this award helps do that.”

Tess will represent Victoria at the National Landcare Awards in August.

Landcare is just one of the North Central CMA programs that focus on the health of private property and farmland.

Our Sustainable Agriculture program includes a range of projects around farm planning, sustainable soils, regenerative agriculture, drainage, and support.

Over the years, these projects have contributed millions of dollars into helping communities and farmers be more sustainable, benefiting their businesses and the environment.

February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

This year's focus is women as agents of change.

And Tess is certainly an agent of change.
