The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) in partnership with La Trobe University is hosting the Royal Society of Victoria Symposium in Bendigo on 2 and 3 December to recognise the environmental history and the scientific significance of the North Central region.

Over 200 people from across the State are expected to converge in Bendigo for the two day symposium.  Early bird registration is open until 23 October. 

Dr Alan Yen, Councillor of the Royal Society of Victoria, is coordinating this symposium in Bendigo, “We will concentrate on the management and sustainability of the North Central region and also examine priorities and options for future management. “

For over 150 years, The Royal Society of Victoria (Inc) has promoted science, science education and the applications of science and technologies in the community. This not for profit organisation has had an enormous influence in the Victorian and Australian community.

From the Burke and Wills Expedition, through early meteorology, polar exploration and science, early water and sewerage treatment, geology, botany and in many other fields of science, the Society has consistently advocated the prominence of science in confronting the important issues facing our community.

In 2009 the Royal Society of Victoria conducted the first of its' Young Science Ambassadors program. This science orientation and education program for Year 12 students included us marking the centenary of the David, Mawson and Mackay location of the South Magnetic Pole with a historic Antarctic fly-over in a Boeing 747 with 352 passengers. However, the Society is aware of the importance of regional environmental issues to the local community, and the symposium in Bendigo is one way of giving regional Victoria greater access to information.
