Celebrating Landcare in North Central Victoria

16 Mar 2009

In celebrating Landcare’s contribution to this region, the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is hosting a forum that will include the launch of a publication titled ‘Celebrating our Most Significant Change - Stories of Landcare in the North Central Catchment’. The annual Regional Landcare Forum will be held at Little Lake Boort on 24 March and will recognise the hard work and efforts of the volunteer Landcare community over the past year and encourage Landcare participants to imagine the future.

Landcare has come a long way since its inception and launch in 1986 by former Victorian Premier Joan Kirner at Winjalock, according to the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), which coordinates regional Landcare support.

“The Landcare community has made an enormous contribution to North Central Victoria’s environment and we need to recognise and celebrate the many Landcare volunteers and their achievements in caring for our land. The unique partnership between local communities and Government agencies continues to achieve great things,” said Damian Wells, Chief Executive Officer for the North Central CMA.

“The Landcare network plays an important role during tough times and is also recognised as the social hub of many rural communities, said Mr Wells.

North Central CMA's Regional Landcare Co-ordinator Jennelle Carlier said this year’s event, an initiative of the Victorian Action Plan for Second Generation Landcare, is made possible with the assistance of Powercor Australia, Loddon Shire, and in-kind support from the Boort Development Committee. “Together we will celebrate the achievements of Landcare in our community and look ahead to how we can continue the great work done to date,” said Jennelle.

“We are delighted to have secured inspirational guest speakers for the celebration, including Neil Henson, a Futurist; and Margaret Harrison, Mungindi Music Festival Past President. There will be interesting displays highlighting Landcare Group projects and their achievements from around the region as well as local produce displays.  Goulburn Murray Water will also have an information stand on the day.  We are particularly excited that local Indigenous communities are participating in the event this year” said Jennelle.

“This year’s celebration will include the launch of a publication titled ‘Celebrating our Most Significant Change - Stories of Landcare in the North Central Catchment’ that demonstrate how Landcare has made a difference to people and communities.”

Landcare members interested in attending the event should contact their local Landcare Co-ordinator or the North Central CMA on 5448 7124.
