Celebrate the Wonder of Our Wetlands at Reedy Lake

15 Jan 2010

To celebrate World Wetlands Day 2010 on 2 February, North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Barapa Barapa Nation are holding a public event at Reedy Lake to highlight the rich environment and Indigenous significance of these amazing lakes and wetlands.

The half-day event will allow participants to discover the remarkable and diverse birdlife species and cultural heritage along the walking trail at Reedy Lake Ibis Rookery bird hide outside of Kerang on the Murray Valley Highway.

Project officer from North Central CMA, Melanie Watts, said she was very excited about the planned event.

“World Wetlands Day is celebrated throughout the world and in north central Victoria we have internationally recognised wetlands which we are eager to promote,” said Mrs Watts.

“The event is part of the North Central CMA’s Kerang Ramsar Wetlands Enhancement project and North Central CMA project manager Trent Gibson will talk about planned activities to protect the wetlands and how people can personally get involved in the project,” she explained.

“Local bird enthusiast, Simon Starr, will be on-hand to talk about local bird species and the significance of the wetlands for their breeding and migratory requirements. We will also have a Welcome to Country and Indigenous cultural heritage guided walk by Wayne Webster of the Barapa Barapa Nation, which is fantastic – there is no better way to be introduced to the countryside than through the eyes of local Indigenous community members,” Mrs Watts continued.

The event will be held from 10am-1pm on Tuesday 2 February, with morning tea and lunch provided. Community members are invited to join the group or simply wander the spectacular trail alone or with friends.

“Whatever you prefer to do on the day, please remember to wear sturdy footwear – and if you have binoculars, feel free to bring them along to help you capture the wonders of this area”, said Mrs Watts. “We look forward to seeing you at Reedy Lake”.

North Central CMA requests that you RSVP your attendance and any dietary requirements by 25 January via email: info@nccma.vic.gov.au or telephone 5448 7124.
