Catchment Authority launches social media presence

12 Feb 2013

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) today announced it has joined the growing social media trend officially launching its Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts.

Mr Damian Wells, North Central CMA’s Chief Executive Officer, says social media is a powerful communication tool. “We are broadening our online presence to connect and engage with our community and other stakeholders in a greater capacity.   We will keep people up-to-date with the Authority’s latest news, events, consultations, and service-related information.

“I am excited about the communications benefits of social media and I encourage people to visit www.nccma.vic.gov.au to access the Authority’s social media links.

“The North Central CMA will use this medium to supplement our traditional public communication channels such as newsletters, news releases, and other print media.

“We are committed to sharing a wide range of information with diverse audiences in a consistent and timely fashion. For example, the release of environmental water into the Loddon or Campaspe Rivers. People who live along the river and who follow us on social media will know immediately when and why environmental water is being released from the storages.

“We have been trialling the posting of rich content such as the increasing numbers of waterbirds breeding in our wetlands, and even images of the live hatching of turtles in Gunbower Forest. So anyone with an interest in the natural environment can enjoy following the North Central CMA on social media,” Mr Wells said.

The social network statistics website ‘statisticbrain.com’ reports that there are now 1.2 billion Facebook users worldwide and 190 million tweets posted every day. More than 80 million videos are available on Youtube.

Mr Wells added that links or associations made via social media sites to external community groups or businesses should not be viewed as an endorsement.
