Catch-a-Carp at the Cohuna Festival

25 Oct 2013

As part of the 2013 Big Cohuna Festival, the first 100 children between 6-16 years who register for the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) ‘Catch-a-Carp’ fishing competition will receive a free showbag.

The competition is being held along the banks of Gunbower Creek, at the Cohuna Garden Park, on Sunday 3 November from 9am-12 noon.   Registration is free with some great prizes on offer.   North Central CMA’s Tess Grieves explains.  “There are five categories with prizes awarded to young anglers who catch the heaviest carp; heaviest native fish; smallest fish (native or introduced); ugliest catch and most unusual catch.”

Ms Grieves said the main purpose of the day is for kids to have fun, but also provides a great opportunity to educate children about the creek in a family friendly atmosphere.   “During the day we will talk about responsible fishing, the importance of habitat and also highlight the different types of fish that inhabit the creek.  These types of events also raise community awareness about Gunbower Creek and what is being done to protect it.”

Participants will need to supply their own rod and fishing gear; however there will be some spares rods available on the day.  Competitors are required to use bait supplied by the North Central CMA.

Registration commences at 9am in the North Central CMA marquee, which will be located in the Cohuna Garden Park.

Pre-registering for the competition is highly recommended as the event will book out fast. Please phone the North Central CMA on 03 5448 7124 or email at info@nccma.vic.gov.au

This event is being held in partnership between the North Central CMA’s Gunbower Key Asset Protection Project funded by the federal government under Caring for our Country and the Living Murray Project, funded by the Murray Darling Basin Authority.
