Carisbrook community comes together for Flood Plan

23 Feb 2012

More than 100 people packed the Senior Citizens Hall in Carisbrook to learn more about the Flood Management plan being developed for the town.

Representatives from the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), Central Goldfields Shire, consultants Water Technology, and members from the local Plan Steering Committee were keen to hear of the community’s experience of the flooding in Carisbrook and to provide information on how the plan will be developed.

Ken Coates, Chair of the Plan’s Steering Committee and also a member of the North Central CMA’s Natural Resource Management Committee, said the community of Carisbrook is looking to the future.

“The meeting was very well attended and is an example of the community coming together for a common cause.  I am confident that with support from the community a plan can be developed which will determine the potential impact of a range of flood events on the town of Carisbrook and ultimately reduce the risk of future flooding.”

Ms Camille White, Executive Floodplain Manager from the North Central CMA, said the plan for Carisbrook is one of seven being developed by the North Central CMA in recognition of the devastating floods experienced in towns in North Central Victoria during late 2010 early 2011.

“The next step in the plan’s development will be presenting the community with options to mitigate a number of flood scenarios and seeking their feedback.  We will be working closely with Water Technology, the Shire and the local community group to ensure community expectations are met,” said Ms White.

The next community meeting is scheduled for late May.  Further information can be obtained by contacting the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124 or visiting www.nccma.vic.gov.au
