Campspe River to benefit from flows

9 Sep 2013

The Campaspe River, downstream from Lake Eppalock, will benefit from fresh flows over the coming days as environmental water is released to enhance the river’s health.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is managing the delivery on behalf of the Victorian and Commonwealth Environmental Water Holders.   Starting Monday 9 September 2013, Goulburn-Murray Water will deliver the flow over the next 14 days from Lake Eppalock.

Mr Darren White, North Central CMA Project Manager, said the environmental water release will benefit the natural environment.  “The water will ramp up to an approximate maximum volume of 1,500 ML per day to promote native fish populations, bank vegetation, water quality and habitat for macroinvertebrates in the river.

“Towns along the Campaspe River will not be impacted by the increased flows however community members who live close to the river and visitors to the area may notice a change in water height and appearance.”

Mr White said the water level could rise up to 1.6 metres from current  river levels, but stressed that the water will be contained well within bank capacity as the flows pass to the junction of the Murray River.

The environmental water release is authorised by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder in line with its Seasonal Watering Plan 2013-14.  More information can be found on the North Central CMA’s website http://www.nccma.vic.gov.au/Water/Environmental_Water/CurrentWateringActivities/index.aspx
