Bendigo Urban Flood Study consultation continues

18 Jun 2014

After six months, almost 9,000 letters, 12 city-wide consultation sessions, and ongoing contact with residents, the final stage of consultation for the Bendigo Urban Flood Study gets underway next week with sessions for Strathfieldsaye and Junortoun residents.

The study, released to the community in November last year, details the possible extent and level of floodwaters across urban Bendigo in a range of potential flooding events.

Led by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo, the study incorporates the most comprehensive urban flood modelling undertaken in Victoria’s history.

North Central CMA CEO Damian Wells said ensuring the community was fully informed of the study was fundamental for the project team.

“The study is all about the wellbeing of the Bendigo community, so teaming a consultation program with the thorough technical work in the study has been crucial,” Mr Wells said.

“The feedback we’ve received will assist the North Central CMA, the City of Greater Bendigo and emergency services such as the SES to prepare for and respond to flooding in our city.”

As with previous sessions, Strathfieldsaye and Junortoun residents and property owners attending next week will be able to meet with North Central CMA and City of Greater Bendigo staff to view maps produced by the flood model and discuss flood risk as it applies to their property.

Mr Wells said the feedback from next week’s sessions, and any further community feedback received, would be collated and provided to colleagues at Council.

“We’re committed to ensuring that anyone who’d like to share their comments can continue to do so. If residents can’t make it to the upcoming sessions they can continue to contact us by phone, email or in-person — we’re here to listen,” Mr Wells said.

Next week’s sessions take place this coming Monday 23rd June and Wednesday 25th June at the Strathfieldsaye Sports Club, Club Court, from 2pm to 7pm. Property owners planning to attend can RSVP the North Central CMA on 1800 282 944 or by email: flood_study@nccma.vic.gov.au
