Bendigo Urban flood study

13 Nov 2013

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo, is commencing a staged, six month release of the draft results from a flood study for the urban areas of Bendigo for community consultation.

The study area includes the Bendigo Creek catchment from Kangaroo Flat to Huntly and outlying suburbs of Maiden Gully, Strathfieldsaye and Junortoun.

“This is an important project for the Bendigo community that will not only help us better plan the future growth of the City, but also assist us to more effectively use the funds that we have for fixing existing drainage problems and responding to flood related emergencies” said Mr Craig Niemann, Chief Executive Officer of the City of Greater Bendigo.

Mr Damian Wells, Chief Executive Officer for North Central CMA said the primary purpose of the study was to produce updated flood maps that can eventually be incorporated into the Greater Bendigo Planning Scheme.

“Draft results from the Study are now available and they will be released in stages across the city, beginning with the Epsom-Huntly community. Over the next six months our communication program will notify all landowners who have properties in areas that the study has identified as subject to flooding” he said.

“There will be a series of public workshops where community members can discuss one on one with North Central CMA or City of Greater Bendigo staff what the new flood mapping might mean for their individual circumstances,” said Mr Wells.

“Many properties have already been identified as subject to flooding from previous studies and their circumstances are unlikely to change much. But some properties weren’t previously identified and may now be in line to have new flood related planning controls applied to their property in the future and we want to provide these residents the opportunity to discuss the new flood maps with us first.”

Public workshops will be held across all areas of the city beginning with the Epsom-Huntly community.  Residents are encouraged to contact North Central CMA to arrange an appointment to meet with staff at one of the workshops.

The first workshop will be held at the Epsom-Huntly Recreation Reserve on Monday 2 December from 1pm to 8pm. A second workshop will be held at the same venue on Wednesday 4 December from 1pm to 8pm.

“Bookings are essential to ensure you get to meet with a staff member on the day. We ask that people remain patient when trying to contact us as we are expecting a large number of enquiries.” said Mr Wells.

Please contact North Central CMA on 1800 282 944 to arrange a time or make alternative arrangements should you not be able to attend at the specified times.

Dates and venues for additional public workshops across the remainder of the city will be announced at a later date. Further information can be found on the North Central CMA or City of Greater Bendigo websites at www.nccma.vic.gov.au or www.bendigo.vic.gov.au
