NCCMA Drought Employment Program (2008-2009) Calling for Expressions of Interest

17 Nov 2008

Building on from the success of previous Drought Employment Programs, the Victorian Government has announced funding for a further Drought Relief Package in 2008/09. People are invited to apply now for positions in the extensive program that employed over 150 people in the North Central region last year.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is managing the $2.4 million program which is part of the Victorian Government's Drought Relief Package. This natural resource focussed program aims to protect our environment and inject employment opportunities into the drought-affected North Central community.

The 2008/2009 Program will employ work crews from across the region to undertake on-ground works, with a focus around priority natural resource assets of the catchment. The North Central CMA will work closely with partner organisations to organise work site locations and manage work crews across private and public land.

North Central CMA Chief Executive, Damian Wells said that "last years program included extensive weed control, fencing of wildlife corridors, watering of tree plantings, rubbish removal, construction of stock containment areas, water savings projects, pest animal control and other initiatives". "All participants received extensive training which is a huge benefit for members of the works crews" said Mr Wells.

Tim Shanahan from North Central CMA is managing the program. Mr Shanahan says that "what is fantastic about this program is that it will protect and enhance our natural resources, whilst supporting rural communities in times of drought by providing an alternative income source."

"I encourage all members of the rural community, especially landholders, to submit an expression of interest to the North Central CMA to participate in the Drought Employment Program. It's a fantastic opportunity to do something positive for the environment and your community" said Mr Shanahan.

Mr Wells said that the first works crews will be on the ground in December and work will continue through until the end of June next year. Mr Wells also emphasised that "there are flexible working arrangements available so people can work for a couple of months or for the duration of the program depending on their circumstances".

Expressions of interest are open until the end of December 2008, however work crews will begin in early December. Further information and details on the Drought Employment Program can be found online at www.nccma.vic.gov.au.

An expression of interest (EOI) can be made by phoning North Central CMA reception toll free on 1800 751 751 or by downloading an expression of interest form online at www.nccma.vic.gov.au, then sending it through to the office by fax (03 54487148) or by post (P.O.
