Celebration of Life's Cleanest Essential

13 Oct 2008

Australians are encouraged to Protect, Conserve and Get Involved in water resource management during National Water Week from October 19 to 25.

North Central CMA's Waterwatch is organising an ocean of activities, while individuals may adopt their own project such as clearing rubbish from a local waterway. Anyone can get involved.
National Water Week, which has been running for 15 years, also reminds us of a fundamental reason that makes Australia the Lucky Country.

This year's theme is 'Clean Water - Essential for Life', and focuses on sanitation, a basic necessity denied to 2.6 billion people around the world who do not have a toilet, which results in 1.5 million preventable deaths a year.

"As a community we need to find solutions and be aware of the ways to manage our water resources today that will not threaten future generations to meet their needs. As individuals we can all help to protect and conserve our water resources," said North Central Waterwatch facilitator Melanie Barrot.

This year the North Central CMA has an important project in the upper Loddon and Campaspe Rivers where some of the regions best water quality exists.

North Central CMA will undertake risk assessments to better understand the impacts of increased population in that area and the effects on water quality and river health. "There is a wealth of information collected by our community Waterwatch monitors and the North Central CMA will be using that data and further information collected through scientific studies to help local government improve the sustainability of rural and urban development, "said North Central NRM program Manager Dan Mudford.

The CMA will also work with landowners to improve the quality of streamside vegetation and prevent erosion as well as managing stock access to the river.
