Working Together to Improve the Loddon River

26 Nov 2007

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and the landholders and communities living along the Loddon River (from Baringhup to the Murray) are taking important steps in their aims to restore balance to the river's natural health.

North Central CMA's Riverine Officer, Angela Gladman said that the implementation of a large-scale project since 2003 has resulted in the installation of over 200km of river fencing to control stock access, improved the habitat provided by the vegetation along the river and protected the quality of water entering the river from adjacent paddocks.

"Other activities have included willow and erosion control, revegetation, implementation of the Serpentine to Boort Floodplain Management Plan and modification to man-made barriers to native fish migration," said Angela.

"Essential to the success of the project has been the strong support of the local community, in particular the landholders who live along the river. Communities in the North Central region have a history of positive action when it comes to working together to manage the health of our waterways," said Angela.

With the aim of sharing community knowledge, the North Central CMA will be holding a short bus tour on Thursday 6 December. Departing from Durham Ox at 9am, the bus will be stopping at a number of sites between Yando and Serpentine before returning to Durham Ox by 2pm.

The day will involve informal discussions about the ongoing management of fenced river frontages and incentives available for landholders.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided, however bring your own chair if you like.
