Winter flows for the Loddon River

12 May 2014

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is coordinating the delivery of environmental water to the Loddon River, between Loddon Weir and Kerang Weir.

Mr Brad Drust, North Central CMA’s Executive Manager of Loddon and Avoca Catchments, said the environmental water releases would provide a consistent flow to the river until October 2014, subject to environmental water availability.

“The target volume of 100 Megalitres per day will maintain water levels in the river for fish and water bugs and provide water to vegetation that’s dry after the summer months.

“Landholders downstream of Loddon Weir, including Twelve Mile Creek, might notice a rise in the river level of approximately 0.3 metres however levels downstream of Laanecoorie Reservoir will remain within normal operating ranges,” Mr Drust said.

Landholders who would like further information or to receive an email advising when and where environmental water is being delivered in the future can contact the North Central CMA on (03) 5448 7124.  Regular updates are also available at www.nccma.vic.gov.au

The environmental water entitlement used for this release is set aside specifically for the environment and does not affect town or irrigation supplies.

The release is authorised by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder in line with its Seasonal Watering Plan 2013-14, a copy can be downloaded from www.vewh.vic.gov.au

The Loddon system section of the plan is developed in collaboration with the North Central CMA in partnership with the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Goulburn-Murray Water and community representatives.
