Spotlight on Region’s Environment

30 Nov 2009

Some of the Australia’s leading scientists will converge in Bendigo next week to share their knowledge about the region’s environmental and social history.

The two-day symposium, titled ‘North Central Victoria: A Golden Era – a change ecosystem forever?’ is hosted by the Royal Society of Victoria and supported by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and La Trobe University.

Presentations will be wide and varied, and include geology, water use, threatened communities and species, fire and community involvement.

North Central CMA Chief Executive Officer, Damian Wells, is delighted that leading environmental researchers and historians will focus their attention on the natural features of this region.

“This is a good opportunity to hear from those directly involved in the research and management of our environment,” said Mr Wells. “Unless we are able to learn from the latest knowledge and information, our future economic and social prosperity may be jeopardised”.

One of the most anticipated discussions during the two-day symposium is the environmental impact of climate change. As our political leaders debate the notion of climate change and its effect on our economy and livelihoods, the discussion at this symposium will focus on both the predicted environmental outcomes and the changes that area already being observed.

Other themes are: pre-European settlement; discovery of gold; geological history and changes; water – the diminishing resource; plants – threatened communities and species; animals – adaptation to a simplified environment; and land use and management.

The Royal Society of Victoria regional symposium will be held at La Trobe University Bendigo on 2–3 December. Tickets are still available. For registration and further information, visit www.icms.com.au/ncv/.
