Showing off nature’s beauty

13 Jan 2017

It’s a bumper year for birds and there is no better place to see them in our region right now than Lake Cullen.

Heavy rain in September and October has combined with a rare environmental flow to create perfect conditions for thousands of native and migratory birds at Lake Cullen, north west of Kerang.

And the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) wants to show them off to the world, well to locals anyway.

“We have chosen Lake Cullen as the venue for this year’s popular Breakfast with the Birds event,” North Central CMA Project Manager Adrian Martins said.

“The floods provided the perfect conditions in the surrounding catchment for a flow to Lake Cullen this season, and given its size, it is an important site for bird breeding.

“It is beaming with birdlife at the moment, with large numbers of migrating wading birds, as well as near-threatened magpie geese, the endangered Australasian bittern, pelicans, swans and black-winged stilts.

“Breakfast with Birds will be a great opportunity for the whole family to come and have a look at Lake Cullen to enjoy the sights and sounds of the bird life.”

The free event will run from 6.30am on Sunday 5 February, a few days after World Wetlands Day.   “Anyone can come along and enjoy the display Mother Nature has put on,” Mr Martins said.

“Breakfast will be provided, and registration is essential. Park just outside the lake and we will bus you around Lake Cullen to the best vantage points.

“Once breakfast is over, why not visit the nearby Avoca Marshes, Lake Bael Bael and Lake Elizabeth. They are also looking magnificent at the moment and are attracting plenty of birds.”

To book, go to www.eventbrite.com.au and search Breakfast with the Birds, call 03 5448 7124 or visit www.nccma.vic.gov.au
