Platypus secrets to be revealed at public events

22 Jul 2014

Those of us strolling quietly along the Campaspe River are occasionally lucky enough to be captivated by the sight of a platypus making its way through reeds and trees fringing the waterway.

But how much do we actually know about these mysterious animals? That the texture of their tail fur is similar to that of steel wool for example, or that they have venomous spurs on their hind legs?

These secrets and more will be revealed at an upcoming public talk to be jointly hosted by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Echuca Landcare Group.

Taking place in the Shire of Campaspe Function Room from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday 23 July, the event — which is suitable for all ages — includes a light supper and features renowned platypus expert Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy.

On the day following his evening presentation, Geoff will visit with Echuca Primary School’s ‘Sustainability Squad’ in the morning and Grade 4 and 5 students from St Joseph’s Primary School, Rochester, in the afternoon.

The event, funded by the Victorian Government through the North Central CMA's 'Caring for the Campaspe' project, is taking place as part of a platypus roadshow visiting schools and community groups from Echuca to Axedale.
