Pipeline Project savings water wetlands

9 May 2014

For the first time, three wetlands located on private property will receive environmental water over coming weeks to improve and protect habitat for native plants and animals.

The environmental water has been allocated from savings generated by the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline project.

Mr Tim Shanahan, North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Acting Manager for the Murray, Campaspe and Avon-Richardson catchments explained further.

“An environmental water allocation of up to 32 ML for the three private wetlands in the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline system is part of the 1,000 ML from the Wimmera Glenelg Rivers Environmental Entitlement, held by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder.

“The environmental water is set aside specifically for the environment, which means the releases do not affect water allocations to irrigators or town supplies,” Mr Shanahan said.

A joint project between the private landholders, North Central CMA, the Victorian Environmental Water Holder and Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water, the releases are approved by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder in line with its Seasonal Watering Plan 2013-14.
