Managing Willows Along the Loddon

24 Oct 2007

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is currently coordinating the control of some small willows found to be regrowing along the Loddon River in Kerang, which is a follow up to the removal of large Willows back in June this year.

North Central CMA's Riverine officer, Angela Gladman said "This follow up weed control action is crucial to ensure that these willows continue to be managed effectively".

"Due to the practicalities of managing the site, and in the safety interests of the local contractors who removed the willows, the large live willow trees were felled and their freshly cut stumps painted with frog-friendly herbicide".

"With more sunlight reaching the water and the moist conditions, some fallen willow twigs and branches have since re-shot with leaves in spring, so we're following up on this".

Willow control works will be undertaken by local Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) staff under the direction of the North Central CMA.

Ex-shire mayor and president of the Kerang Historical Society, Mr Ollie Jane supportsthe works program. "It is pleasing to see government funding being used effectively to implement on-ground works to enhance the Loddon River."

The North Central CMA thanks the Kerang community for their support and patience during these works, which aim to improve the health of the Loddon River for all to enjoy.

Community members who have any enquiries regarding the program are encouraged to contact the North Central CMA's reception on 5448 7124.
