Hop Into Growling Grass Frog Monitoring Season

20 Nov 2007

Ever heard the sound of a stuttering Doberman coming from your backyard pond? Heard the sound of an outboard motor struggling to start with no boat to be seen? You might have heard a Growling Grass Frog!

The Growling Grass Frog is a large frog with a very distinctive growling advertising call. The Growling Grass Frog (Litoria Raniformis) is listed as a threatened species under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.

The frog can be heard calling between October and January and is typically found in permanent water bodies. Unlike many other frogs this species enjoys basking in the water on very hot days. They can vary in colour from mostly green with some gold to mostly gold with some green, but always have these two colours. They are formidable hunters and feed on other frogs and have also been known to eat baby birds!

North Central Waterwatch is asking interested community members to help monitor this species within the North Central region and hopefully find some new populations.

A Growling Grass Frog monitoring session will be held in St Arnaud at the DPI office in Long Street on Thursday 6th December 2007 at 7pm. To register your interest in attending please RSVP to Melanie Barrot by Thursday 29th November 2007 on 0427 887 254 or melanie.barrot@nccma.vic.gov.au
