Help us Clean up the Creek

Gunbower Creek from the bank with tree stumps and grass
6 Feb 2017

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has been working with the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme for years to remove natural rubbish from Gunbower Creek, and now it is turning its attention to the man-made kind.

As the North Central CMA begins destroying invasive pale yellow water lily and choking willow trees from the creek, it is also focussing on rubbish in and around the waterway.

“Gunbower Creek is one of the region’s most important waterways, and it gets a lot of use,” North Central CMA Project Manager Adrian Martins said.

“We work with local authorities and community groups regularly to deal with invasive weeds in the creek and our flow program aims to increase the population of native fish in the waterway.

“Next month we are working with the Gannawarra Shire, Campaspe Shire, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the on the man-made threats to Gunbower Creek.

“We are inviting the community to join us on Tuesday 28 February as part of Clean Up Australia Day to help us clean up Gunbower Creek. One thing everyone in the area agrees with is making Gunbower Creek as beautiful and as healthy as it can be.”

Registration points will be set up at Garden Park Cohuna (behind the Gateway Visitor Centre), and at the Gunbower Recreation Reserve from 9am.

“Bring your hats, gloves, a drink of water and sturdy boots to help us collect rubbish on the foreshore,” Mr Martins said.

“If you have a boat or kayak, bring that down as well, and we will get into the water to see what is there.

“At noon, head back to Garden Park at Cohuna and we’ll put on a free barbie for the volunteers to say thanks.”
