Frogs Field Guide Launch and Picnic

5 Oct 2011

The north central Victoria region is home to 12 different native species and one introduced species of frogs. To assist in identifying the different frogs a new field guide will be launched at Anderson’s Mill, Smeaton, from 10 am on Sunday 16 October.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has produced the Frogs Field Guide which describes each species found in the region and their distinguishing characteristics - appearance, call, habitat and behaviour.

Ms Cass Davis, North Central CMA Regional Waterwatch Coordinator, said the Frogs Field Guide is for anyone interested to learn more about the frog species who call the north central Victoria region home.

“The Guide has been specifically designed to use in the field and contains lots of information that can assist with identifying frog species, their eggs and tadpoles.

“Frog enthusiasts are encouraged to come to the launch where guest speaker, Ray Draper, will talk about the frogs found in the north central Victoria region.   Ray has over 40 years experience and has monitored Growling Grass Frogs (Litoria raniformis in western Victoria for the last 35 years. Ray will also talk about a potential threat to frogs, the amphibian Chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium), which can cause a lethal disease in many frog species.”

The north central Victoria region contains two threatened species listed under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988; the Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis) and the Bibron’s Toadlet (Pseudophryne bibronii).   In addition, the Growling Grass Frog is also listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under the Commonwealth’s Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

The Frogs Field Guide launch will conclude with a picnic by Birch’s Creek.   Everyone is welcome to attend.   Please RSVP to the North Central CMA by Thursday 13 October on (03) 5448 7124 or email info@nccma.vic.gov.au.  All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the Frogs Field Guide
