Environmental Flow for the Coliban River

20 Dec 2007

An environmental flow will be released for the Coliban River downstream of Malmsbury Reservoir, the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Coliban Water jointly announced today.

North Central CMA CEO, Gavin Hanlon described the current climatic circumstances as 'extremely difficult' and highlighted that the continuing drought had placed numerous demands on water.

"The North Central CMA recognises that this drought continues to have a severe impact upon the region, particularly its people," Mr Hanlon said. "During such dry and extreme conditions the environment is also placed under considerable stress."

In June, the Victorian Government "Qualified Rights" to water on the Campaspe system, including the Coliban River. Under the qualification, passing flows in the Coliban River were ceased to save water for consumptive use and a reserve was established to manage environmental risks.

Water Quality monitoring indicates that the recent onset of warmer weather has seen the water quality in the lower Coliban reduced to critical levels, placing the river and its fish populations at risk.

Managing Director of Coliban Water, Mr Geoff Michell, stated that the North Central CMA and Coliban Water had obtained independent scientific advice to help develop a plan to protect the Coliban River's environment and fish habitat when water quality deteriorates. This release of flows is part of the river protection plan

"Being able to protect this part of the Coliban system is very important, and only the minimum amount of environmental water needed will be released," stated Mr Michell.

"The flows in the lower Coliban will be in line with the scientific environmental flow recommendations for the system of 5 megalitres a day and will only occur for the minimal time required of 14 days," said Mr Hanlon.

The North Central CMA and Coliban Water will continue to work together to ensure that common interests including water security, water availability and the protection of river environments are maximised in the current drought conditions.
