Drought Employment Program Works at Donald

7 Sep 2007

Bealiba’s environment is receiving a boost through work undertaken by local Drought Employment crews.

As part of a regional program funded by the Victorian Government and managed through the North Central Catchment Management Authority, a range of river health works are being undertaken along Cochrane’s Creek which feeds into the Avoca River just out side of Bealiba. These works include river bed and bank stabilisation and stock management to improve native vegetation growth and water quality.

With support from the North Central Catchment Authority (NCCMA), the Donald Drought Employment Crew has spent a week at Bealiba fencing 2km along Cochrane’s Creek, a fantastic result according to North Central CMA Chief Executive Officer, Damian Wells.

“The works completed by the Donald Drought Employment Crew in partnership with Department of Primary Industries (DPI) completes previous works that have been undertaken at this site. These works included fencing of an up stream section of Cochrane’s Creek for stock management and bank stabilisation.  The North Central CMA being the caretakers of river health in the region understands the importance of building on previous works and enhancing our previous investments and as such keeps us focused on our targeted assets as well as responding to community concerns.  With the aid of the Drought Employment Crew this has enabled us to implement activities which contribute to the enhancement of key environmental assets which are important to the local community,” said Mr Wells.

The North Central CMA works with the community to protect and improve rivers and the natural environment in North Central Victoria, and implements the Drought Employment Program through partnership with local government, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Goulburn-Murray Water, Parks Victoria, Landcare and other Catchment Management Authorities.
