Drought Employment Crews Begin Weed Removal Along McIvor Creek

25 Mar 2009

Local people employed through the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s Drought Employment Program will undertake weed removal along McIvor Creek from mid-March to late April.

With support from City of Greater Bendigo staff, the Drought Employment Crew will be undertaking large scale weed removal work, beginning at Barrack St, Heathcote and working down-stream to the McIvor Highway.

Targeted weeds include Spiny Rush, Willow, Ash, Peppercorn, Pampas Grass, Bridal Creeper and Blackberry.

The North Central CMA has asked the community to understand that this is a long-term project.

“We are hoping that the local community will be patient throughout this process and understand that this is a long term project, and that some areas will take time to recover through replanting. At times, heavy machinery may be operating within the reserve and your assistance in maintaining public safety is required, “said Lang Dowdell, Leading Hand - Natural Reserves Parks and Natural Environment for the City of Greater Bendigo.

“Residents will be able to remove discarded timber and mulch after hours from designated areas. However, please be aware that this is offered in good faith and that individual discretion should be used on how much you take. “

The North Central CMA continues to be pleased with the success of work undertaken by Drought Employment Crews throughout the region. “The Drought Employment Program continues to achieve great results and we are delighted that the program has employed over 170 people this year, including local landholders, to undertake environmental works during this current unprecedented drought” said Damian Wells, North Central CMA Chief Executive Officer.

The North Central CMA works with the community to protect and improve rivers and the natural environment in North Central Victoria, and implements the Drought Employment Program through partnership with local governments, Parks Victoria, Landcare and other Catchment Management Authorities.

The regional Drought Employment Program is part of a Victorian Government $2.4 million investment across the state.
