Coping with Today Planning for Tomorrow

1 May 2008

Landholders from across the Pyramid Boort Irrigation Area gathered at the Yarrawalla Hall early this month to participate in the 'Coping with Today, Planning for Tomorrow' information session.

According to North Central Catchment Management Authority's Tim Shanahan the session provided participants with a unique opportunity to receive up-to-date information on a range of key irrigation and farm management issues.

"Participants got an overview of the changes to carryover water and irrigation system reconfiguration progress in the Pyramid Boort Irrigation Area from Goulburn-Murray Water," said Mr Shanahan.

"Landholders had the chance to hear the latest thinking around the importance and benefits to land managers to undertake soil salinity surveys, whole farm planning, installing irrigation re-use systems and other on-ground works that are a part of the Loddon Campaspe Irrigation Region Land and Water Management Plan and supported by the Department of Primary Industries".

"The day provided landholders with the opportunity to access local agency expertise and support, like Centrelink who had staff discuss the availability of financial drought assistance. Landholders could then discuss this information with other locals in developing options to cope with the pressures posed today while planning for tomorrow".

The day ended with participants touring local sites to get a practical understanding of the topics presented. These included inspecting a dairy farm, which had undertaken extensive on-ground works, and an irrigation system reconfiguration tour.
